Punctuation is the devil in the details of good writing. The problem is when you write without punctuation it still reads well to you: Punctuation is not necessary for you to understand what you wrote for as you read it, all the punctuation marks are implied by you.
Unfortunately, the poor reader has no understanding of what you meant and must rely on punctuation to interpret what you wrote. Understand that punctuation is to help the reader interpret what is written, not what you meant.
The devil also does a grand job of revealing your education to the reader. Note that there is a significant deference between your schooling level and how well you are educated. You may well have graduated from university but that is no assurance as to how well you are educated in the proper use of English. Your writing surely will reveal your English skills and presumably your overall ability. But. And there is always a ‘but.’ Read the other article Writing Well in this site to learn the basics of how easy it is writing well.
If this example does not convince you of punctuation’s importance, all is lost:
A letter to Jack
Dear Jack,
I want a man who knows what love is all about You are generous kind thoughtful People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we are apart. I can be forever happy - will you let me be yours?
Certainly an encouraging love letter. Or, lacking in the basics of punctuation, was she writing a ‘Dear John’ letter?:
Dear Jack,
I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind, thoughtful people, who are not like you. Admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me. For other men I yearn! For you I have no feelings whatsoever. When we are apart I can be forever happy. Will you let me be?
Yours,
So the lesson is to always write in Word as it suggests corrections to grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
A most enjoyable funny book on punctuation is the best seller Eats, Shoots & Leaves, (2003) ISBN 1-592-40087-6. A joy to read as you learn.
